CCOP-JMG Advanced Training in Geochemical Analysis: Base Metal by Inductive Couple Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and Gold by Fire Assay, Cupellation Techniques
March 8 - 15, 2015, Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia

Background:

Geochemical analysis forms an integral component for all mineral exploration and mineral resource evaluation programmes. Hence, rapid, high-throughput and reliable geochemical analytical techniques are critically important to generate relevant geochemical data and assist field exploration geologists plan and implement mineral exploration project strategies in an effective and efficient manner.

Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometric (ICP-OES) technique is an important laboratory workhorse for any mineral exploration project. Its offers fast, reliable simultaneous trace analysis of up to 40 elements in a single minute. With this analytical technique, geochemical data can be generated within a short period of time to enable field geologists make quick decisions in the identification and evaluation of potential metal anomalies in a particular survey area.

Fire-assay/Cupellation technique is a standard international method to pre-concentrate and collect traces of gold and other noble metals in exploration geochemical samples. Coupled with atomic absorption spectrometric measurement of gold in the dore bead, the fire-assay/cupellation technique permits the determination of ultra trace concentrations of gold up to 0.001 ppm in geochemical samples, and thus is an effective and essential tool for any gold exploration project.

Objectives :

This four-day training programme on ”Advanced Course in Geochemical Analysis” is aimed to provide and equip participants with:-

  1. Technical knowledge on the principles of ICP-OES spectrometry and its application for rapid geochemical analysis.
  2. Hands-on exposure on the operation of an ICP-OES spectrometer.
  3. Technical knowledge on the principles of fire-assay/cupellation technique for trace gold in geochemical samples.
  4. Hands-on exposure on Fire-Assay/Cupellation technique for gold analysis in geochemical samples.

Participants:

Participants from CCOP Member Countries involved in mineral exploration programmes and/or geochemical analysis.  Participation is by invitation only.
