CCOP-CGS Metadata Phase II Project Third Workshop

CCOP together with the China Geological Survey (CGS) organized the CCOP Metadata Phase II Project Third Workshop on 20-22 July 2010 in Shanghai, China.  This workshop is basically aimed to train the CCOP Metadata Working Group in the usage of the CCOP GeoInformation Metadata System (GIMS) developed by CGS for the Project, including data entry and metadata management.  Thirty-seven participants joined the meeting including the Member Countries, Lao PDR, Myanmar and CCOPTS staff.

At the opening ceremony, the following speeches were delivered:

·      Welcome Address by Mr Jiang Shijin, Director, International Cooperation Division, CGS in behalf of Prof Dr Zhang Hongtao, Permanent Representative of China to CCOP

·      Welcome Address by Prof Dr He Qingcheng, CCOPTS Director

·      Opening Address by Mr. Deng Zhiqi, Director General, Development and Research Center, CGS

The participants were first given a background of the project by Ms Marivic Pulvera Uzarraga, CCOPTS Geo-Information Sector Coordinator, followed by an overview of the published CCOP Standard for Geoinformation Metadata S01 by the Project Leader, Dr Zhang Mingua of CGS.  Dr. Wang Chengxi from CGS conducted the CCOP-GIMS training.  During the training, the participants had the opportunity to use the system with their own real data.  After the training suggestions were made by Dr. Jiang Zuoqin of CGS to revise the S01 standard, which were then discussed and agreed by the participants.  The revised standard will be issued after the workshop.

Discussion on the metadata system and future plan of the project were made.  CGS confirms its technical assistance to Member Countries on the system upon request.  Comments on the system were considered for further system development and improvement.  These include the local installation of the system in each Member Country, and only published data will reside in the CCOP server; import of data in excel format to the system;  transfer of the phase 1 data compiled to the system; and display of the browsegraphic image at the system.  Suggestion for the next step of the project is to make use of CCOP’s Asian Multilingual Thesaurus for Geoscience in the CCOP-GIMS to support multi-lingual features.

A one-day excursion at the World Expo 2010 was organized for all the participants.
