"To facilitate and coordinate the implementation of applied geoscience programmes in East and Southeast Asia in order to contribute to economic development and an improved quality of life within the region."

CCOP – KIGAM Unconventional Oil and Gas Project National Coordinators Meeting & Technical Session (UnCon-M1)

The CCOP Technical Secretariat (CCOP TS) in cooperation with Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) conducted the first National Coordinators Meeting and Technical Session of the UnCon Project, Mapping of Black Shale Formations for the Prediction of Shale Resources on 22-23 March 2015 in Krabi, Thailand.  The objectives are to have a common understanding of the goal and objectives of the Project and to discuss the overall work plan.  The agenda items included a technical session on the overview of black shale mapping and reporting of the CCOP member countries on their shale potential.

There were 17 participants representing the member countries - Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Lao-PDR, Malaysia, PNG, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, and staff of CCOP TS

Dr Young Joo Lee and Dr Byeong-Kook Son of KIGAM were the main resource persons of the technical session. They are also the Project leader of UnCon project, with KIGAM as the project sponsor.  The member countries presented the status of oil/gas shale exploration & development in their respective countries.  It is important to note that among the CCOP countries, China is already at an advanced state in shale development, with shale gas already in production in the Sichuan basin operated by CNPC and SINOPEC. Meanwhile JAPEX (Japan) is currently conducting research that includes drilling of wells targeting the Onnagawa formation – a Neogene organic-rich siliceous shale in the Akita-Yamagata basin (Japan sea side of NE Japan).  While Korea and Indonesia have already started their basin study to identify areas with gas/share potential.  The rest of the participating countries are just starting their study on oil/gas shale potential of their sedimentary basins.

The implementation of the UnCon Project in CCOP is very timely and provides a new opportunity (and challenges) to address the energy security of the region.  Shale exploration and development leverages on the advancements in directional drilling and fracturing technologies that are pioneered by oil and gas companies in North America.  There is a need for the member countries to create a better learning and collaborative environment as these technologies is developing at a fast pace.  CCOP countries will also learn new geochemical models of how rocks reacts to well optimization, surface management technologies and to answer the question: can it be done safely?

The Meeting agreed to develop a template for the assessment of the sedimentary basins of the CCOP region.  The template will be prepared by KIGAM and to be circulated to all participants to fill up with the needed information prior to the next Meeting (UnCon M2).  Sample template complete with input data will also be provided as reference.  In addition, the formation of a local working group was also agreed.  The working group will be composed of geoscientists and experts (if available) will be given the task of following/attending the UnCon activities and review the materials from the workshops and meetings for further dissemination.

Mr Simplicio Caluyong, Project Coordinator, will coordinate the implementation of the UnCon Project in the CCOP Technical Secretariat.  He will be working closely with the Project leaders in KIGAM and the national coordinators in the member countries.
