Meeting on Groundwater Pollution and Risk Management in the CCOP Countries


The second meeting of the CCOP-GSJ/AIST Groundwater Project Phase II supported by the Japanese Government through the Geological Survey of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) was held at Xi’An Hotel in Xi’An city, China from 2nd to 3rd September 2010. The Meeting, with the topic of groundwater pollution and risk management in CCOP countries, was attended by twenty-six participations from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.

 

The Opening Ceremony started with the welcome remarks delivered by Dr. He Qingcheng, Director of the CCOP Technical Secretariat, welcome address by Dr. Youhei Uchida, the Project Leader. Dr. Tu Yuliang, Deputy Director General, Xian Center of Geological Survey, on behalf of the host country, delivered the welcome speech to all participants in the meeting and the official opening speech was delivered by Mr. Jiang Shijin, Director of International Cooperation Division, CGS.

 

After the opening ceremony, the meeting started with the progress reports of groundwater Project phase II presented by Dr. Youhei Uchida. The introduction of the CCOP-GSJ/AIST Hydrological Mapping under CCOP Groundwater Project were explained by the Project leader and discussed by the participants. The country reports related to Groundwater Pollution and risk management in the CCOP member Countries were presented and discussed. All participants benefited from the two lectures on "Groundwater Contamination in Asian Countries and Risk Management" and "The Investigation of Groundwater in the Ordos Basin" delivered by hydro-geologist experts from Japan and China, respectively. The second day of the meeting was started by the working group presentations on “progress report on hydrological mapping”. They were delivered by Thailand and Vietnam.

In closing, Dr. Nguyen Nhu Trung, Geo-resource Sector Coordinator, on behalf of CCOP, expressed sincere thanks to the Japanese Government through the Geological Survey of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) for the continued support of CCOP activities and Xi’ An Center of Geological Survey, China Geological Survey for cordially hosting the Meeting.

 

The next meeting of CCOP-GSJ/AIST Groundwater Phase II will be held in Hanoi Vietnam on September 2011.
