On 23 January 2020, Associate Professor Adam Switzer, holding concurrent positions as Principal Investigator at the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) and Assistant Professor at the Asian School of Environment, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, succeeded Prof. Kerry Sieh as Permanent Representative of Singapore to CCOP.
Assoc Prof Switzer is primarily a sedimentologist with interests in coastal geomorphology, palaeoenvironments and natural hazards. The overarching driver of his research is a desire to use geomorphological and sedimentological techniques to solve contemporary problems at local, regional and international scales. His main research interest lies in using coastal stratigraphy to define the recurrence interval of catastrophic marine inundation events (tsunami or large storms) and investigate the relationship between tectonics and climate change in coastal systems.
We are pleased to announce that the recruitment for the 2020 Fall Semester CCOP-IERI internship program is now open. Though it is still uncertain when the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic settles down, we are working on the following schedule for the subject internship.
Dr. Young Joo Lee, CCOPTS Director, accompanied by Dr. Sommai Techawawan, Director-General of the Department of Mineral Resources, and Datuk Shahar Effendi Bin Abdullah Azizi, Chairman of the CCOP Executive Committee, paid a visit to Mr. Warawut Silpa-Archa, Ministry of Natural Recourses and Environment on 17th December, 2019. Dr. Lee thanked Thailand for hosting the 55th CCOP Annual Session and the 73rd CCOP Steering Committee Meeting, which was held on 3rd-9th November, 2019 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The Director then introduced CCOP’s activities including a 2020 plan that focuses on the preparation of geological data in urban geology.
Energy China Forum 2019 9th Asia-Pacific Shale Gas & Oil Summit was successfully held on 25-27 September 2019 in Shanghai. This summit was jointly hosted by Shanghai United Institute for Unconventional Resources (SUI) and Shanghai Energy Economy Committee of SEA and supported by co-organizers China Petroleum Enterprises Association and Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia.

Dr Young Joo Lee, Director of CCOP TS, visited the Ministry of Unification in Republic of Korea. The Director spoke with Ms Hyeonjeong Lim, Director of the Development Cooperation Division of the Inter-Korean Exchange & Cooperation Bureau. The Deputy Directors from the same division, Mr Dong-Ki Han and Ms Gowoon Lee, have also attended. The Ministry of Unification confirmed to support North Korea’s participation in the 55th CCOP Annual Session. CCOP is to contact North Korea immediately and directly through the Embassy in Thailand.
