As of 1.1.2002 about 1.3 million line-km of 3D seismic and 642,000 line-km of 2D seismic has been acquired in Malaysia. A total of 956 exploration wells have been drilled from 1962 to 2001. Since the inception of the latest R/C PSC arrangement in 1997, there is a marked increase in exploration drilling and seismic activities. In 2002 Petronas is planning to drill 47 exploration wildcat and appraisal wells and shoot a total of 187,000 line km of both 2D and 3D seismic.

There are currently 44 producing oil fields and 11 producing gas fields and several others are under development. These oil and gas fields produce about 600,000 barrels of oil and 5.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day respectively.

The nation's oil and gas reserves stood at 3.4 billion barrels and 82.5 trillion cubic feet respectively as of 1 January 2001.

Oil and gas are currently being produced from all three regions; Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah. Sedimentary deposition and subsequent structural overprints in these regions have resulted in a variety of structural and stratigraphic configurations which provide conducive conditions for hydrocarbon generation, migration and entrapment.

Blocks under Exploration PSC or have exploration commitments

  Peninsular Malaysia Region

There are currently 10 offshore blocks under exploration PSCs or have exploration commitments. Oil and gas production from Peninsular Malaysia account for approximately 63% and 44% of the country's total production respectively. The region covers mainly offshore areas of Peninsular Malaysia and is contained in four main sedimentary basins, namely the Malay Basin and the Penyu Basin to the east, and the North Sumatra Basin and the Central Sumatra Basin in the Melaka Straits to the west. Current exploration targets are clastic reservoirs of Miocene and Oligocene age.

  Sabah Region

There are currently seven offshore blocks under exploration PSCs or have exploration commitments. Oil and gas productions from Sabah account for approximately 14% and 5% of the country's total production respectively. The Sabah Region covers a wide area of offshore and onshore blocks contained in three main sedimentary basins, namely the Sabah Basin, the N.E. Sabah Basin and the S.E. Sabah Basin. Current exploration targets are clastics and carbonates reservoirs of Miocene and Pliocene age.

  Sarawak Region

In Sarawak, there are currently 10 offshore blocks held under exploration PSCs or have exploration commitments, including one deepwater block. Oil and gas productions from Sarawak account for approximately 23% and 52% of the country's total production respectively. The Sarawak Basin covers a wide area both onshore and offshore the State of Sarawak that has been divided into several geological provinces, namely the West Baram Delta, Balingian, Central Luconia, Tinjar, Tatau, West Luconia and SW Luconia and SW Sarawak Provinces. Each one of these provinces is unique in terms of hydrocarbon playtypes.
